Neuroanatomy Textbook Spread: The Trigeminal Nerve (Rendering)

This illustration was part of a group project, where Natalie Lucas, was asked to create a linear sketch (found below) depicting the path and function of the trigeminal nerve. The linear sketches were then passed on to me, and I was asked to develop the linears into a fully rendered spread that was suitable for a neuroanatomy atlas or textbook.

This piece won the Steve Gilbert Award for artistic excellence in the representation of structure and function in 2024.

2023.

  • This project was designed to give students the experience of working in a production team. Each student was expected to participate in a workflow that allowed for easy handoff of their work to another student who would then be asked to complete the next stage.

Working this way required students to create clear, unambiguous, complete, and fully labelled linear sketches, which were then passed on to another student. The job of the other student was to then take the fully developed linear sketches and finish the rendering of the textbook spread.

The class was also asked to create a style guide that would allow for a cohesive design and layout among the various neuroanatomy spreads.
